Constructed in the year 628, Sensoji Temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple. As a centerpiece of the Shitamachi culture, it is popularly known as the Asakusa Kannon Temple. Playing host to many events such as New Year’s visits, the Sanja Festival held in May, the Hozuki (ground cherries) Market in July and the Hagoita (wooden paddle) Fair held at the end of the year, the Sensoji Temple attracts many visitors throughout the year. As a seasonal attraction in December in Hagoita, from traditional kabuki/apprentice geisha to around 20,000 wooden paddles of celebrities and sports players who symbolize the year are lined up.
