Ueno

Statue of Saigo Takamori
西郷隆盛像

This is a bronze statue of Saigo Takamori, who played an active role in the late Edo Period and early Meiji Era, and is located in Sannodai Square in Ueno Park. The sight of Saigo Takamori walking his dog in his right hand as depicted in the statue has become famous as a symbol of Ueno. The statue was made by Koun Takamura, father of poet and sculptor Kotaro Takamura.
