Established in 1733, during the Edo period, this fireworks festival boasts such history and tradition that it is even broadcast live on television, making the “Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival” famous throughout Japan. This year there will be an additional 2,000 fireworks, with some 22,000 fireworks altogether to be launched in a diversity of colorful displays. Enjoy the show from the banks of the Sumida River, or alternatively watch the “flowers of fire” blooming in the gaps between city buildings for another fun experience.

The 39th Adachi Fireworks FestivalA 25-minute walk from Adachi-odai Station on the Nippori-Toneri Liner.

A dazzling celebration featuring 12,000 fireworks in one hour

Among Tokyo’s summer fireworks festivals, the “Adachi Fireworks Festival” is held the earliest. Appropriately for the season’s curtain-raiser, the festival is a high-density, concentrated event launching approx. 12,000 fireworks in one hour. Being able to sit along the Arakawa river terrace, relaxing as you gaze up at the sky while enjoying the show, is another reason this fireworks festival is so popular.

The Edogawa Fireworks Festival and the 33rd Ichikawa Fireworks Festival are held simultaneously above the Edogawa river terrace. The event begins with a powerful “duel” in which 1,000 fireworks will be launched in 5 seconds. Displays featuring 8 aesthetically different themes are accompanied by background music matching each theme in meticulously orchestrated performances, enthralling the audience.

Held jointly with Toda City (located on the opposite side of the river, in Saitama Prefecture) above the Arakawa river terrace, the Itabashi Fireworks Festival is celebrating its 58th year. Featuring some of the highest displays seen in Japan using fireworks requiring 10 pyrotechnicians to stage as well as the “Great Niagara Falls” display measuring a massive 700 m in length—one of the longest in the Kanto region—this festival is packed with awesome power. The sight of Tokyo’s largest fireworks ball, the “Five-Shaku”, bursting into a shower of light can only be described in one word—“masterpiece”.

2017 Jingugaien Fireworks FestivalA 5- to 10-minute walk from Kokuritsukyogijo-mae and Aoyama-ichome Station on the Toei-Oedo Line.
