Once the site of the northern enceinte (kitanomaru) of Edo Castle, Kitanomaru Park becomes a colorful landscape painting layered in reds, yellows, and browns when the leaves of its many trees—including not only the Japanese maple varieties on Momiji Mountain on the park’s west side, but also ginkgo, wax tree, winged spindle tree, and Japanese rowan—take on their autumnal hues. The sight of the 200–300 year old giant ginkgo trees atop the stone walls in their yellow-leafed splendor is also a must-see of the season.

The gardens are illuminated from dusk until 21:00 between November 18 and December 6, enabling visitors to enjoy the magical sight of autumn leaves glowing against the darkness.
