Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune is said to have made Asukayama into a renowned cherry blossom viewing site as a recreation area for Edo-ites. Here, approx. 600 cherry tress bloom in all their glory. The park also has a lot of playground equipment, enabling parents to enjoy the cherry blossoms while their kids play.

A magnificent avenue of cherry trees stretches alongside the Kanda River from Akebono Bridge in Nishi-Waseda to near the Nakanohashi Bridge. Visitors are delighted by the sight of the tree branches stretching to the surface of the river, their full, tumbling blossoms appearing to touch the water. The trees are also illuminated when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.

Along the Arakawa River close to the Ojima Komatsugawa Park, there are the Komatsugawa Senbonzakura-approx. 1,000 cherry trees spread over approx. 2 km in a north-south direction. Here, you can enjoy 10 cherry blossom varieties, including somei-yoshino, oshima-zakura, and yama-zakura.

The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace is a captivating, spacious space covering an area of approx. 210,000 m2. On the grounds, there are approx. 30 varieties of cherry trees. Ranging from the kawazu-zakura and tsubaki-kanzakura found on “Cherry Island” within the ruins of the Edo Castle Honmaru to the April-flowering kanzan, fugenzo, and kikuzakura, the many different shapes and colors of the cherry blossoms brighten spring.

This famous cherry-viewing site has approx. 50 cherry tree varieties and approximately 780 cherry trees, of which approx. 450 are somei-yoshino. The komatsu-otome cherry trees discovered on Ueno Mountain are especially recommended. These trees produce small, delicate, pink blossoms.
