Stretching 4.4 km along the banks of the Arakawa River, this cherry-tree-lined walking course takes around 2 hours to complete. During the Meiji period (1868–1912), this area was referred to as the “Five-Color Cherry Blossoms of the Arakawa River banks” and was one of the most famous cherry blossom sites in Tokyo. Since 2009, some 458 cherry trees have been newly planted here in an effort to restore the landscape of days gone by.

Shinjuku City’s only traditional-style Japanese strolling garden, Kansen-en (“sweet spring garden”) is said to have gotten its name from the wellspring water, which was suitable for making tea. With cherry blossoms, azaleas in springtime, fresh verdure in summer, warmly colored autumnal leaves, and yuki-tsuri rope umbrellas protecting trees in winter, the park grounds provide scenery that can be enjoyed all year round.

Alongside the railway lines near JR Iidabashi Station to Yotsuya Station, the former outer moat of Edo Castle remains and preserved in time. The more than 180 cherry trees lining the moat bloom magnificently every year with the moat blanketed in light pink creating breathtakingly beautiful scenery.

Utilizing an approx. one-hectare wide hilly area covered in mixed forest, these gardens feature an array of trees and plants that bloom each season. Itabashi City’s flower, the soft windflower, will be in bloom until early April, while the best time to see the white bracts of handkerchief trees hanging down from the branches is late April.

One of the daimyo gardens constructed in the early Edo period (1603–1868), Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden is characterized by its landscaping that features a strolling path around a central pond and numerous famous stones. From late March, the cherry blossoms blooming in the area around the pond take on a tinge of fresh green, followed by vividly colored azaleas, then elegant wisteria as the garden takes on colorful hues in preparation for early summer.
